Pillbugs are the fourth species of animal available in the Garden island, and the twenty-first in the Space Zoo. Pillbugs are speeding animals. There are 8 different types of pillbug. Like all Space Zoo animals, more pillbugs are unlocked progressively as the player upgrades the pillbug habitat. They can be unlocked when the player upgrades their ship to Garden 2.

Note: All boss animals can only be found in the stampede and give XP after the player has initially befriended it in a boss mission.
Behaviour[]
- Wild: Pillbugs plod along mostly alone in the stampede, moving at a very slow pace.
- When ridden: Pillbugs continue scuttling along, this time at a faster pace.
- When angry: Pillbugs jump up, wrap themselves into a ball and roll forwards, taking the shape of whichever object they are based on (e.g. Sushi Bug, a sushi roll). They accelerate faster and faster when angry and have poor steering, until upgraded to level 4.
- In habitat: Pillbugs scuttle awkwardly, occasionally having a look from side to side.
- Selected in habitat: Pillbugs move their body from side to side.
Tips[]
Pillbugs are okay animals to use, being serviceable with their abilities such as being able to smash things that the player crashes into when angry (level 6), which makes the player more inclined to use pillbugs for longer. They offer stability when not angry, and can act like a running animal, like an ostrich when angry.
Habitat Upgrades[]
- Level 1 - Ride for an extra 1.5s before a pillbug gets angry
- Level 2 - Add two new rare pillbugs to the stampede (Medical Pillbug, Gear Bug)
- Level 3 - Energy drains 10% slower in the Garden
- Level 4 - Turn faster when riding on rolling pillbugs
- Level 5 - Add two new rare pillbugs to the stampede (Tyre Bug, Armapillo, unlocks Sushi Bug mission)
- Level 6 - When rolling, pillbugs will throw you clear if you crash
- Level 7 - Get bonus coins while travelling at top speed on pillbugs
- Level 8 - 2x more rare pillbugs in the stampede
- Level 9 - Add a new rare Pillbug to the stampede (Frillbug)
